The first Cypriots arrived in Canada between 1950 and 1953 then
again after the Independence of Cyprus 1961 to 1968 and the
invasion from 1974 to 1995.
There is estimated to be 35,000 Cypriots living in Canada. They are
mainly concentrated in Toronto and surrounding areas such as
Mississauga, Kitchener, Winnipeg and Ottowa. You will also find them
in Vancouver and Montreal.
Most of the Cypriots originally worked in factories and catering now
the next generation are mainly educated and have entered into
professions such as Lawyers, Accountants and Doctors.
They try to keep their identity through having Cypriot Community
Centres in Toronto and Kitchener which also include schools. They also
hold events like Cypriot festivals, it’s difficult for them because there is
a large Greek community and they follow their traditions too as the
Church congregations will be mainly Hellenic.
In Canada they have several organisations under the umbrella of their
Federation of Cypriots in Canada and PSEKA Canada and many Greek
Cypriots are involved in the lobbying of the Cyprus problem
